Greg Norman Champions Growth of Indian Golf: Key to Success Through Hosting More Exciting Events

New Delhi: Golf legend Greg Norman believes India is a “sleeping giant” in the sport. He thinks that hosting more international tournaments can help unlock the country’s potential. Recently, during the Asian Tour’s International Series at DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurugram, he expressed his enthusiasm for golf in India.

“India is just starting its journey in golf. Looking ahead, there are amazing opportunities over the next 25 years. Indian women golfers have already made a mark on the LPGA, inspiring many across the country,” said Norman, former CEO of the LIV Tour.

He mentioned that the Asian Tour didn’t get enough recognition in the past due to the focus on European and American tours. “But we shouldn’t forget regions like South Africa, Australia, and the entire Asia-Pacific,” he added.

The recent $2 million International Series in India is important as it’s one of ten events recognized by the Asian Tour. These tournaments offer a pathway to the LIV Golf League. Players like Ollie Schniederjans and Chase Koepka aim to secure a spot on the LIV roster through this series.

Norman supports the idea of making this series an annual event and hopes for LIV’s debut in India soon. “The International Series is crucial for creating opportunities for young golfers in India. We are building pathways to success,” he noted.

According to Norman, LIV is poised to become a global golf platform, aiming to reach players on all continents. He highlighted that while Anirban Lahiri is currently India’s only LIV player, Indian golf has been struggling to find international champions since Shubhankar Sharma’s victory in 2018.

“LIV can rejuvenate Indian golf, which seems to be at a standstill,” he mentioned. “The international appeal of LIV is significant for growth.”

Norman praised young talents like 15-year-old Kartik Singh, who made headlines by making the cut at the recent International Series event. He emphasized how LIV has introduced new opportunities and formats that attract many to the sport.

In summary, Norman believes that with the right support and more international exposure, Indian golf can flourish and gain the recognition it deserves on the world stage.
