The Grizzly track and field team kicked off their three-day competition in California with a strong performance at the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.
One of the standout athletes was freshman Kyle Iorg, who shined in the men’s javelin. He tossed an impressive 207 feet and 3 inches, securing third place. This throw was nearly 10 feet further than his previous best and ranks as one of the top throws in the region this season, putting him in the running for a regional appearance. Coach Doug Fraley praised Iorg, noting his achievement as remarkable for a true freshman.
At Azusa Pacific, sophomore Truman Thompson ran a personal record in the men’s 800 meters, clocking in at 1:51.19, which landed him fourth in a competitive field. His performance is particularly noteworthy given he recently returned from a leg injury. Coach Fraley expressed pride in Thompson’s comeback, highlighting his hard work and dedication.
Tara Ohlwiler, a sophomore sprinter, also made waves in California. Hailing from Mission Viejo, she finished second in her heat of the women’s 100-meter dash with a new personal record of 11.86 seconds—just shy of the Grizzly program record of 11.80 seconds. She didn’t stop there; Ohlwiler also set a new personal best of 24.04 seconds in the women’s 200 meters, placing eighth overall.
The day was also successful for other Grizzlies. Erin Wilde came in fourth in the women’s high jump with a mark of 5-7.75, while Ashley Carroll put in another solid javelin performance, finishing fifth with a throw of 144-6.
Overall, the first day set a positive tone for the Grizzlies, and Coach Fraley noted the importance of having another chance to improve over the next couple of days. This determination reflects a broader trend in sports where resilience and recovery play vital roles in an athlete’s performance, as seen in recent studies indicating that mental toughness and physical recovery greatly affect outcomes in competitive environments.
As the Grizzlies look ahead, they are scheduled to compete again in the Beach Invitational. It’s exciting to see how their hard work and spirit will carry them through the remainder of their competition.
