GS Retail recently announced that its fresh food preorders at GS25 convenience stores are becoming popular, especially among younger customers. The company is excited to expand this category as the trend grows.
The preorder service, accessible via their mobile app, held four promotional events from January to February. These events resulted in around 20,000 orders, pushing fresh-food sales through the app up by an impressive 540% compared to last year.
This innovative model allows customers to browse and pay for fresh goods online, then pick them up at their nearest GS25. It solves a major issue in convenience retail: it reduces the risk of spoilage by enabling advance orders.
Interestingly, most customers using this service are younger. Those in their 30s make up 38% of the buyers, followed by shoppers in their 20s at 28%. Together, they represent about 70% of total orders. This shift reflects two significant trends in South Korea: the rise of single-person households and a preference for shopping close to home rather than heading to larger supermarkets.
In response to these changing habits, GS25 plans to enhance its offerings. They aim to introduce more smaller-sized products that cater specifically to single-person households. Additionally, there are plans to open more fresh-focused stores in residential areas.
According to Dr. Yoon-Jin Kim, a retail expert, “The growth of convenience stores is closely tied to lifestyle changes. More people want flexibility and variety without the hassle of large stores.”
As GS Retail pushes forward, they intend to keep offering seasonal products and timely promotions at prices that appeal to their customer base. This approach not only meets the needs of today’s shoppers but also positions GS25 well for the future.
