Guardians Deal Shane Bieber to Blue Jays: What This Means for Both Teams and Their Futures

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Guardians have traded former Cy Young winner Shane Bieber to the Blue Jays. Bieber, who won the Cy Young in 2020, has been recovering from Tommy John surgery since April 2024. He recently made a rehab start for Double-A Akron, throwing four innings.

In return, the Guardians received pitcher Khal Stephen from the Blue Jays. At Double-A New Hampshire, Stephen has a record of 9-1 with a 2.06 ERA, although he is currently on the injured list with a right shoulder issue.

Stephen was drafted by Toronto in the second round of 2024 and has been impressive. He has racked up 99 strikeouts in 91.2 innings across 18 games. The opposing teams are only hitting .196 against him, showcasing his talent on the mound.

This 22-year-old right-hander has had a strong season, moving through different levels in the Jays’ system. He was recently listed as the fifth-best prospect in their minor league system by MLB Pipeline. Additionally, FanGraphs rated him as the 80th best prospect in all of minor league baseball, which highlights his potential.

Stephen’s journey began this season at Class A Dunedin, where he went 3-0 with a 2.06 ERA before being promoted to Class A Vancouver. There, he posted an impressive 1.49 ERA over nine starts. His ascent was cut short when he was placed on the injured list on July 20 after just one start at Double-A New Hampshire.

This trade reflects a trend where teams swap injured players, allowing them both to rebuild and strategize for the future. It’s a reminder that the game requires patience as players recover and develop.

The Guardians drafted Bieber in 2016 and renewed his contract after last season. There’s still uncertainty about when he’ll pitch again in the majors for the Blue Jays.

As we move closer to the trade deadline this Thursday at 6 p.m., teams must weigh their options carefully, especially with players like Bieber and Stephen recovering from injuries. This decision-making period can significantly impact the future of both franchises.
