Guildford Borough Council Unveils Bold Climate and Nature Strategy for a Sustainable Future

We’re excited to share our renewed commitment to tackling climate change with our updated Climate and Nature Strategy and Action Plan. Our goal? To achieve Net Zero carbon emissions by 2030 while also protecting the natural environment for future generations.

This plan, developed alongside Waverley Borough Council, outlines a clear path forward. Here’s what we aim to do:

  • Cut down emissions
  • Boost nature recovery
  • Strengthen our area’s resilience to climate impacts

Cllr Angela Goodwin, our Lead Councillor for Environment and Sustainability, expressed her enthusiasm: “I’m thrilled to launch our new strategy. It’s ambitious and sets a clear vision for Guildford’s future. Addressing climate change and restoring nature are vital challenges, and we are committed to decisive action.”

As we work towards building a more sustainable borough, we’re also preparing for the upcoming changes in local government in 2027. Our strategy includes initiatives to bolster our climate response before then.

Priorities for Action

Our strategy focuses on four key areas:

  • Reducing carbon emissions in Guildford
  • Supporting biodiversity
  • Building resilience against climate change
  • Collaborating with residents and businesses

Transportation and energy use are significant contributors to our emissions. Therefore, we’ll prioritize measures like:

  • Cutting energy demand
  • Improving efficiency
  • Supporting sustainable travel options

Working Together for Change

Achieving Net Zero isn’t something we can do alone. It requires everyone’s effort, including:

  • Local communities
  • Businesses
  • Public sector partners

Nature-based solutions, like tree planting and habitat restoration, will be crucial for both reducing carbon and enhancing biodiversity.

We will continuously monitor our progress and provide regular updates to ensure transparency and accountability as we push forward with our Climate and Nature Action Plan.
