Guillermo Del Toro Unveils ‘Fury’: A Grippingly Violent Project with Oscar Isaac at TIFF—Imagine ‘My Dinner with Andre’ Meets Action!

After unveiling his new film Frankenstein at the Toronto International Film Festival, Guillermo del Toro shared plans for another intriguing project called Fury. This will star Oscar Isaac and is described as a “violent” film, reminiscent of the classic My Dinner with Andre but with a dark twist.

Del Toro explained, “I’m currently writing Fury. It aims to capture the thrilling elements of Nightmare Alley, but with a much crueller edge. Imagine discussions over dinner, only to have violence break out after each course.”

He dove deeper into his interest in this topic, expressing a fascination with the violence we inflict on each other—mentally, emotionally, and physically. At 60, he reflected on his life, saying, “I’m in my decade of regret,” hinting that these themes will be prominent in his storytelling.

Additionally, del Toro is adapting The Buried Giant, a fantasy novel by Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro. He described this project as an epic stop-motion film that will tackle complex themes, particularly aimed at adult audiences rather than children. Del Toro aims to merge the unique qualities of stop-motion with the depth typically found in live-action narratives.

Fans of del Toro are likely familiar with his earlier work, Pinocchio, which also featured a darkly matte style in stop-motion. This time, he’s pushing boundaries even further, aiming for a more mature take on storytelling.

Both Fury and The Buried Giant showcase del Toro’s continued exploration of human nature and the darker sides of life. This aligns with trends in cinema, where many creators are venturing into darker, more intense themes in their works. Audiences are increasingly drawn to complex narratives that reflect genuine human experiences.

Frankenstein, which premiered in Venice, will hit theaters on October 17 and be available on Netflix starting November 7. As del Toro continues to evolve as a storyteller, his new projects promise to challenge and engage viewers in thought-provoking ways.
