Gulveer Singh has made headlines by winning the men’s 10,000m race at the Asian Athletics Championship. His impressive performance set him apart as he surged ahead of his competitors, securing the top spot with a time of 28:38.63 minutes. This victory is especially notable as it makes him the third Indian to achieve this milestone, following in the footsteps of Hari Chand in 1975 and G Lakshmanan in 2017.
In the final lap, Gulveer overtook Bahrain’s Albert Kibichi Rop, showcasing his skill and determination. This isn’t his first medal at the Asian Championships; he previously clinched a bronze in the 5,000m race. Another Indian runner, Sawan Barwal, finished just shy of a bronze, taking fourth place.
Gulveer, hailing from Sirsa, has already made his mark in international athletics. He earned a bronze medal in the 10,000-meter race at the 2022 Asian Games and secured another bronze in the 5,000 meters at the 2023 Championships in Bangkok. Recently, he also won gold at India’s national Federation Cup and has set a personal best of 12:59.77 in the 5,000m at the Boston University Terrier DMR Challenge.
Earlier that day, Servin Sebastian put India on the medal table by winning bronze in the men’s 20km race walking event with a time of 1:21:14. He finished behind China’s Wang Zhaozhao and Japan’s Kento Yoshikawa. Another Indian, Amit Khatri, ended the race in fifth place.
Gulveer’s journey reflects the rising standard of Indian athletics. With more athletes breaking records and earning medals, it’s clear that India is nurturing emerging talent on the global stage. For further context, according to a 2022 report by the Sports Authority of India, participation and performance in athletics have surged, indicating a bright future for the sport in the country. As Indian athletes continue to excel, they inspire the next generation to chase their dreams in athletics.
