H-E-B Partners with Meals on Wheels and Texas Food Banks: Million Donation to Fight Hunger

H-E-B recently announced a generous donation of $6 million to help combat hunger in Texas. This includes $5 million for food banks and $1 million for Meals on Wheels.

This contribution is timely, especially as news spreads that benefits from the Supplemental Food Assistance and Nutrition Program (SNAP) may end in November if the government shutdown continues. Many Texans rely on this support.

Meals on Wheels Texas provides over 100,000 meals each day to those in need. However, the organization has faced challenges recently due to unexpected funding cuts. This month, it lost about $1.2 million in federal grants, creating a significant funding gap.

Local businesses have stepped in to assist. For example, Bill Miller Bar-B-Q recently donated $192,000 to support Meals on Wheels in San Antonio. Bexar County officials are also exploring ways to help address the nonprofit’s needs.

Currently, around 900 people are on the waiting list for Meals on Wheels in San Antonio. Each person costs about $2,200 per year to provide meals.

These efforts highlight the growing concern over food insecurity in Texas and across the nation. According to a recent report from Feeding America, nearly 1 in 10 Texans face hunger. This statistic underscores the urgent need for support and community involvement.

While organizations like H-E-B and Meals on Wheels work hard, the need for additional funding and support remains critical. As these challenges continue, community efforts and contributions become even more vital in ensuring that no one goes hungry.
