Hanwha’s construction division just received a notable award at the 21st Construction Environmental Management Competition. This event, which took place on the last day of last month, highlights efforts in sustainable construction practices in South Korea.
The competition is significant. It’s organized by the Korea Construction Environment Association and receives support from various government bodies, including the National Assembly and the Ministry of Environment. The goal is clear: to identify and share best practices for eco-friendly construction. This includes the use of green technologies, ecosystem protection, and effective strategies for reducing carbon emissions.
This year, 14 major construction firms participated, submitting 146 projects. Of these, 23 made it to the final round, showcasing the best innovations in the industry. Judges evaluated the projects on several criteria, focusing on eco-friendly management systems, environmental facilities, and greenhouse gas reduction strategies.
Hanwha stood out with two commendations: one for the “Gwangyang Port Yulchon Logistics Complex Site” and another for the “Chuncheon Sokcho Railway Road Zone 7 Site.” The Gwangyang site impressed judges with its renewable energy systems that combine wind and solar power, significantly cutting carbon emissions. This facility not only generates its own energy but also uses eco-friendly sources to power construction machinery and site offices, enhancing both efficiency and sustainability.
The Chuncheon site earned praise for its commitment to biodiversity. It uses water pollution separators and conducts regular checks on endangered species in the area, ensuring minimal disruption to local habitats. This focus on conservation demonstrates how proactive measures can lead to better outcomes for both projects and the environment.
As the construction sector evolves, more companies are prioritizing eco-friendly practices. According to a recent survey by the Korea Construction Environmental Association, 75% of construction firms are investing in sustainable technologies, a significant increase from just 50% five years ago. This shift suggests a growing recognition of the importance of environmental responsibility in construction.
