Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute has launched a new Center for Sepsis Epidemiology and Prevention Studies, known as SEPSIS. This center aims to improve our understanding, prevention, and treatment of sepsis, a serious condition that happens when the immune system goes haywire in response to infection.
Dr. Chanu Rhee and Dr. Michael Klompas, two experts in the field, will lead the SEPSIS Center. They both work at Harvard Medical School and have a deep commitment to enhancing sepsis research and care. Together, they plan to tackle the challenges surrounding sepsis.

In the U.S., over 1.7 million adults are impacted by sepsis each year, leading to more than 350,000 deaths. On a global scale, there are 49 million cases and 11 million deaths annually, making it a significant health crisis. Many survivors deal with long-lasting health issues, adding to the emotional and economic burden on families and healthcare systems.
Although sepsis is a major health challenge, diagnosing it accurately and raising public awareness remain difficult. The SEPSIS Center is poised to make headway in addressing these issues and finding solutions to improve sepsis care.
The Center plans to work with partners at Harvard and worldwide to tackle important aspects of sepsis, focusing on:
- Surveillance and Research: Studying sepsis to better understand its causes and impacts on recovery.
- Policy and Quality Improvement: Reviewing current policies and proposing evidence-based changes to enhance care.
- Collaboration: Teaming up with healthcare systems to create effective prevention and treatment strategies.
Dr. Klompas emphasized the importance of this work: “We have a chance to make a real difference in sepsis care, aiming to reduce its occurrence and improve treatment outcomes for patients.”
The mission of the SEPSIS Center complements Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute’s goal of advancing healthcare through research and innovation.
