Former film mogul Harvey Weinstein is back in court, facing serious accusations once again. Jury selection starts soon in Manhattan, where he must answer charges of sexual assault involving three different women. This marks Weinstein’s third trial in just over five years.

In 2020, he was convicted of two felony sex crimes in New York. Two years later, another conviction came in California. However, an appeals court overturned his New York conviction last year, stating that the judge improperly allowed certain witness testimonies. As a result, Weinstein’s 23-year sentence was thrown out. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg quickly moved forward with plans to retry him and announced a new grand jury indictment in September 2023.
This trial will feature testimonies from past accusers. Notable among them are former actress Jessica Mann and producer Miriam "Mimi" Haley. Another accuser, revealed by Bragg last September, claims Weinstein assaulted her in a hotel back in 2006. Despite overwhelming evidence against him, Weinstein maintains his innocence and has remained incarcerated at Riker’s Island, except for medical treatment periods.
At 73, Weinstein has faced health challenges, including recent treatment for bone marrow cancer and emergency heart surgery. Despite appearing in a wheelchair, he was alert during a recent court session.
Judge Curtis Farber is overseeing the trial, indicating that jury selection could take up to five days. He plans to gauge juror familiarity with the Weinstein case to ensure a fair trial.
The #MeToo movement, ignited by revelations about Weinstein in 2017, reshaped discussions about workplace harassment, especially in Hollywood. High-profile figures like Asia Argento and Ashley Judd have come forward, sharing their experiences and demanding accountability. According to a survey by the nonprofit organizations Time’s Up and the National Women’s Law Center, nearly 70% of women have experienced some form of harassment at work.
Weinstein’s story isn’t just about one man’s fall from grace. It highlights systemic issues within the film industry and beyond, encouraging many to seek change. His history of both critical acclaim and controversy reminds us of the complexities that exist in spaces of power.
