Harvey Weinstein, the former Hollywood producer, is set for another trial related to sexual assault allegations. This case involves Jessica Mann, a former actor. Following a previous mistrial, New York Judge Curtis Farber has expressed his intention to hold the trial by year’s end.
In June, a jury was unable to decide on a rape charge against Weinstein concerning Mann. However, they did find him guilty of assaulting Miriam Haley, a former production assistant for “Project Runway,” in 2006. He was acquitted of charges against Kaja Sokola, a former runway model.
Weinstein is currently facing sentencing for the Haley case, scheduled for September 30. Yet, Judge Farber has made it clear that this will happen only after the trial related to Mann concludes. Unless there’s a guilty plea or a dismissal, sentencing could be delayed.
Weinstein’s attorney, Arthur Aidala, has argued that prosecutors should drop the charges against Mann. Aidala stated that a conviction wouldn’t significantly impact Weinstein’s overall sentencing. He emphasized that Weinstein wants to avoid any association with the term “rape.”
At 73 years old, Weinstein has denied all accusations. His defense paints the interactions with his accusers as consensual. During jury deliberations, tensions rose among jurors, leading to a request for a mistrial.
Weinstein co-founded Miramax and The Weinstein Company and was originally convicted in 2020 for rape, receiving a 23-year prison sentence. This conviction was a major moment for the #MeToo movement, highlighting issues of sexual harassment and abuse. However, in 2022, New York’s highest court overturned that verdict, citing improper testimony during the trial.
In addition to the New York charges, Weinstein was convicted in Los Angeles for sexual assault and is appealing that ruling. Currently, he remains at Rikers Island, often dealing with health problems.
