Hawai‘i Island Community Health Center is making waves in healthcare with an impressive 71% cure rate for Hepatitis C, far surpassing the national average of 33%. This breakthrough offers fresh hope in the battle against a virus that affects the liver and can lead to serious complications like liver cancer.

Dr. Melissa Bumgardner, the center’s Director of Pharmacy Services, emphasizes, “This is not just treatment — it’s a cure.” She highlights that they are not merely managing a chronic illness but actively eliminating it.

Hepatitis C has long been a significant public health concern, especially among underserved communities. With no vaccine available, early detection and effective treatment are critical. The center’s innovative pharmacy-led initiative successfully treats patients over an 8- to 12-week period, demonstrating a commitment to patient-centered care.

What sets this program apart is its proactive approach. Instead of waiting for patients to seek help, staff use data tracking and community outreach to identify at-risk individuals. Collaborating closely with medical providers, they streamline the treatment process, making it easier for patients to receive timely care.

Richard Taaffe, the center’s CEO, stresses how transformative this is: “Hep C used to be a death sentence. Now we have a cure — and we’re delivering it to those who need it most.”

Hawai‘i faces a high liver cancer rate, with specific populations, such as Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, disproportionately impacted by Hepatitis C. Most new infections stem from injection drug use, highlighting the need for accessible, stigma-free healthcare.

Dr. Bumgardner reflects on the importance of their work, stating, “To cure a disease that takes years off patients’ lives is incredibly rewarding.” The center’s success not only affects individual lives but also has broader implications. It could lower healthcare costs, prevent cancer, and reduce mortality rates. In July 2022, this health center was formed from the merger of East Hawai‘i’s Bay Clinic and West Hawai‘i Community Health Center.
