Kentucky is seeing a big rise in students choosing health-related fields. According to recent data from the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE), enrollments in these majors have jumped by 22.8% since 2022, adding nearly 7,000 new students.
What’s even more interesting is who is pursuing these degrees. The data highlights significant growth among key groups:
- Appalachian students: up 32.1%
- Adults aged 25 and older: up 17.3%
- Low-income undergraduates: up 30.5%
- First-generation college students: up 31.0%
These increases are crucial for Kentucky’s healthcare system, which is facing notable workforce shortages. CPE President Aaron Thompson emphasizes the importance of expanding educational opportunities for these groups, noting that it’s leading to better salaries and stronger healthcare teams statewide.
To tackle the workforce challenges, Kentucky has taken steps like passing Senate Bill 10 in 2022 to enhance nursing training and licensure. The following year, House Bill 200 created the Healthcare Workforce Investment Fund, providing scholarships and support to help more individuals enter high-demand healthcare jobs.
Despite progress, many hospitals report thousands of job openings, especially in rural areas. CPE Vice President Leslie Sizemore states that ongoing efforts are necessary to fill roles in nursing, behavioral health, and other vital fields. To support these efforts, CPE is requesting $1 million from the Kentucky General Assembly for future initiatives.
Since 2022, the Healthcare Workforce Collaborative has made strides by funding summer programs, offering millions in scholarships, and providing grants to institutions.
