ROME (AP) — Pope Francis is resting comfortably after a quiet night as he continues to recover from a serious lung infection. This marks the tenth day of his hospitalization, according to the Vatican.
Although the Vatican did not confirm if the 88-year-old pope was awake, they assured that he had a good night’s sleep and is currently resting.
Doctors reported on Sunday that blood tests indicated early signs of kidney issues, but they are managing the situation. While his condition remains critical, there haven’t been any respiratory problems since Saturday. He is receiving high levels of supplemental oxygen and was alert enough to attend Mass.
The medical team has emphasized the seriousness of his condition, especially given his age and existing lung problems. A major concern is the risk of sepsis, a severe blood infection that can complicate pneumonia.
As of now, there have been no signs of sepsis in the updates provided by the Vatican.
This hospitalization ties the longest stay of his papacy; in 2021, he spent ten days recovering from surgery to remove part of his colon.
In New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan addressed the pope’s fragile health, suggesting that many church leaders are quietly facing the possibility of a serious decline. Dolan expressed hope that Francis would recover, but acknowledged the concerns surrounding his health.
The situation has sparked discussions about what might happen if the pope becomes incapacitated and whether he might consider resigning.
