Morgan State Softball Faces Tough Loss Against Harvard
This past Sunday, the Morgan State softball team opened their season with a tough 10-1 defeat against Harvard during the Upstate Classic at Cyrill Stadium.
Harvard (5-4) showcased strong hitting, recording ten runs from ten hits, while the Lady Bears (0-5) managed a single run on four hits. Morgan’s only run came in the second inning when Olivia Garner took advantage of a throwing error, allowing Denver Obermeyer to score.
However, Harvard quickly responded. Finley Payne hit a home run in the second inning, pushing the score to 6-1. They later secured their lead with four runs in the fourth, including a two-run double by Alexa Wohr.
For Morgan State, Olivia Pagano led with two hits, while Rylee Hyde and Obermeyer each contributed one hit. Millie Cousins pitched 2.2 innings in relief and recorded two strikeouts.
Harvard’s Payne stood out, going 2-for-2 with three runs and four RBIs. Nicolette Hunter earned the win for Harvard, allowing just one run over four innings and striking out six batters.
Next, Morgan State will face their rival, Towson, on February 26 at 2 p.m. in the TU DeMarini Invite. The historical rivalry has been neck-and-neck, with the two teams having split their last ten meetings. Towson has won the last two contests, but Morgan’s last victory against them was a decisive 9-1 win in 2023.
As Morgan State moves forward in their season, consistent improvement and team spirit will be essential. With a mix of seasoned players and newcomers, fans are hopeful to see a turnaround in the upcoming games.
