HONOLULU – The University of Hawai’i men’s volleyball team faced a tough challenge recently. Ranked third, they had their impressive 11-match winning streak snapped by seventh-ranked Pepperdine, losing by four sets at Bankoh Arena. The match scores were 28-26, 25-22, 15-25, 30-28.
This defeat also ended a remarkable 13-match home winning streak against Pepperdine, a streak that dated back to 2009.
Kainoa Wade shone for Hawai’i, leading the team with 19 kills and contributing with nine digs and three blocks. After a slow start, he turned things around, delivering 14 kills with just one error in the final three sets. Louis Sakanoko wasn’t far behind with 15 kills, hitting .344, along with seven digs and two blocks. Adrien Roure added 10 kills and made significant contributions with three aces and four blocks.
Setter Tread Rosenthal was a key player, recording 42 assists and guiding the team to a solid .328 hitting percentage. He also made his 100th career ace during the match. Middle blockers Justin Todd and Trevell Jordan each played effectively, with Todd adding four kills and five blocks.
On the opposing side, Pepperdine’s Cole Hartke led all players with 24 kills, making a big impact in the fourth set. Ryan Barnett also contributed with 13 kills of his own.
The match began with Pepperdine narrowly taking the first set. They quickly turned the tide in the second set, coming from behind to establish a two-set lead. In the third, Hawai’i surged ahead early, dominating the set with a 9-3 start and never looking back. Wade’s performance in that set was impressive, with seven kills on 11 swings without any errors.
