RALEIGH, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University softball team faced a tough matchup against Shaw University at Worthdale Park on Friday.
In the first game, Makayla Vinson kicked things off with a two-run homer, giving the Rams a 2-0 lead early on. They extended their lead to 3-0 by scoring again in the fourth inning. However, the Bears fought back. They managed to tie the game with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh. Both teams scored once in the eighth, leading to a nail-biting ninth inning. Ultimately, the game ended with a wild pitch walk-off, giving Shaw a 5-4 victory.
Koralie Morin had a standout performance, pitching 8.2 innings and achieving a season-high of nine strikeouts.
In the second game, the Rams started strong again, scoring two runs in the first inning. But Shaw quickly responded, tying the game in the second and taking the lead in the third with two more runs. The Rams managed to bring the score to 4-3 with another run in the fourth, but Shaw added one more in the sixth, sealing the game at 5-3. Jyla Thomas pitched for 5.1 innings and recorded three strikeouts.
WSSU will close out its season on Monday, May 4, with a home game against Claflin University at 11:00 AM. The senior day ceremony, originally scheduled for May 2, will still take place at 1:00 PM in the C.E. Gaines Center.
