UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 6 UConn women’s hockey team faced off against No. 3 Penn State in the Regional Final and fell short, losing 3-0. With this, the Huskies wrap up their season with an impressive record of 28 wins, marking the most in the team’s history.
The game kicked off with Penn State taking the lead just 100 seconds in, thanks to Matilde Fantin. UConn goaltender Tia Chan faced a barrage of shots, making 14 saves in the first period alone, but Penn State ended the first frame ahead, 1-0, outshooting the Huskies 15-7.
The second period was a test of defense for both teams. UConn held strong, despite facing penalties that gave Penn State a brief 5-on-3 advantage. Chan continued to shine in net, turning away another 14 shots. Although the Huskies found more offensive rhythm, they couldn’t break through Penn State’s solid goalie, Katie DeSa. The second period ended with the score still at 1-0.
In the third period, UConn amped up their efforts, putting 17 shots on goal. However, DeSa’s performance kept them at bay. Penn State extended their lead to 2-0 with less than seven minutes left. UConn had a couple of power-play chances but couldn’t capitalize. Penn State sealed their victory with an empty-net goal, making the final score 3-0.
Despite the loss, UConn outperformed in several areas. They edged Penn State in faceoffs, winning 38 out of 75, and showed resilience by blocking 15 shots.
From a broader perspective, women’s hockey continues to gain traction across the U.S., with more college teams and increasing viewership. A recent survey by the NCAA reported a 30% increase in attendance at women’s hockey games over the past two seasons, highlighting the sport’s growing popularity.
