Heartbreak on the Road: Cardinals Narrowly Fall to Williams 53-46

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Wesleyan women’s basketball team faced a tough challenge against Williams, ending in a narrow 53-46 defeat. Despite the loss, Olivia Quinn ’26 stood out with an impressive 23 points, starting strong by scoring 11 of the Cardinals’ first 13 points.

Quinn’s early three-pointers helped keep Wesleyan competitive. By the second quarter, the team tightened its defense, limiting Williams to just 4-of-15 shooting and closing the gap after a scoreless stretch of over five minutes. Thanks to contributions from Alli Jones ’27 and Meghan Kirck ’28, the game was tied 24-24 by halftime.

The third quarter saw Williams jump ahead, but Kirck’s five quick points pulled Wesleyan closer before the final period. Early in the fourth, Ali Murphy ’27 tried to ignite a comeback, but Williams quickly responded with a 6-0 run.

Wesleyan fought hard, narrowing the score to 48-44 in the closing minute, but Williams secured the win by hitting crucial free throws down the stretch. Wesleyan’s defense managed to limit Williams to a poor three-point shooting performance, going just 1-of-9. However, they struggled in the paint, where Williams outscored them 28-14.

This loss puts Wesleyan at 3-3 for the season and highlights the importance of consistency in performance. Coach’s insights on team dynamics suggest that learning and adapting will be key as the season progresses. The Cardinals will look to bounce back Wednesday against Coast Guard at 7:30 PM.
