Lindsey Vonn’s Crash at the 2026 Winter Olympics
CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy — Lindsey Vonn, the legendary American alpine skier, faced an unfortunate crash just 13 seconds into the women’s downhill race at the 2026 Winter Olympics. This crash dashed her hopes of winning another Olympic medal after coming out of retirement.
Leading up to the race, Vonn had shown promising form, completing two successful training runs. However, disaster struck when she miscalculated a jump after passing through the fourth gate. Her right arm hit the gate, throwing her off balance and causing her to spiral mid-air before landing hard on her right side.
The atmosphere instantly shifted as spectators fell silent. Medical teams rushed to assist her for over ten minutes before she was airlifted off the mountain.
“Things happen so quickly in this sport,” said Bella Wright, a skier on the U.S. team. “After everything Lindsey has gone through, it’s hard to watch.”
As of now, the extent of Vonn’s injuries remains unknown.
Vonn, 41, re-entered competitive skiing after a brief retirement in 2019 and aimed to clinch a medal in her final Olympic appearance. Her attempt to return included overcoming significant hurdles, including a partial knee replacement in 2024 and a recent ACL tear just a month ago.
“I’ve come back to Cortina because it feels special to me,” Vonn had said previously. Cortina has been the site of many pivotal moments in her career, from her first World Cup podium appearance to becoming the most successful female skier in history. Even though that title now belongs to Mikaela Shiffrin, the need to race in Cortina drove her ambitious comeback.
Statistics show that about 20% of athletes experience an injury during high-stakes competitions like the Olympics. This underscores the inherent risks involved in elite sports, especially for athletes attempting comebacks.
Wright added, “We’ve rooted for her through everything. She’s an inspiration to all of us and should feel proud of her journey.”
Meanwhile, other American contenders, such as Breezy Johnson, are preparing for their events, hoping to bring home medals amid challenging weather conditions in Cortina.
As Vonn recovers, her legacy as a pioneer in alpine skiing remains secure. Regardless of the outcome in Cortina, she has inspired many with her determination and resilience.
