FORT MYERS, Fla. – In a nail-biting finish, Dayton edged out Kansas 59-58 in the final matchup of the Fort Myers Tip-Off. Kansas made a strong effort, overcoming an 11-point deficit, but couldn’t secure the win as the buzzer sounded on S’Mya Nichols’ last drive.
Elle Evans was the standout for the Jayhawks, scoring 16 points, while Regan Williams and Lilly Meister added 11 each. Despite a recent career-high of 40 points, Nichols struggled, finishing with only four. Williams led the team with four rebounds, and Meister recorded a career-high of four blocks. Evans’ performance also marked a milestone, hitting her 200th career three-pointer, placing her among the top players in NCAA Division I women’s basketball.
The game started off poorly for Kansas, who didn’t score until almost halfway through the first quarter. Quickly falling behind, they trailed 24-16 at the end of the first. But Kansas came alive in the second quarter, and Evans’ two consecutive threes brought them back into contention, leading to a halftime deficit of just three points, 33-30.
As the third quarter began, Kansas surged ahead, taking the lead 35-33 with another three-pointer from Evans. The teams traded leads back and forth, with Dayton ultimately ending the quarter with a slight edge, 46-44.
In a thrilling fourth quarter, Kansas briefly took the lead again, but Dayton responded strongly to regain control. With just seconds left, Kansas found itself trailing again after Dayton hit two free throws. Evans drained a final three-pointer, cutting the lead to one point before Dayton’s missed free throws gave Kansas a last chance. However, Nichols’ drive to the basket ended without a foul call, sealing Dayton’s victory.
