In the first game, Sebastian Khan started strong, keeping the Bobcats at bay initially. But Frostburg exploded for six runs by the end of the third inning. Wheeling rallied in the fourth with a two-RBI single from Chris Sauer, making it 6-2. Unfortunately, Frostburg answered with an onslaught in the fifth, scoring ten runs and running the score up to 16-2.

The Cardinals fought back, with Jacob Lentz and Connor Wong contributing to a late surge, bringing the final score to 17-8. Chris Sauer and Jacob Lentz stood out offensively, driving in runs along with Dylan Maltby, who had two hits.

Game two saw Mason Fenwick on the mound. After a shaky start that included a solo homer, he held strong until the Bobcats hit another two-run home run, making it 2-0 after three innings. Wheeling had chances to score but couldn’t capitalize, leaving runners stranded. The game shifted dramatically in the bottom of the fifth, where Frostburg scored seven runs, sealing the Cardinals’ fate at 9-0.

Throughout the games, the Wheeling team showed resilience, but hitting consistency was an issue. They only managed singles, with Christian Boyles leading the team in hits for the second game, but the offense remained stifled by Frostburg’s pitching.

Historically, the Wheeling University baseball team has faced challenges against Frostburg State, which has set the stage for intense competition. The 2023 season continues to present hurdles, mirroring the struggles of past seasons when the team worked on developing their game.

As they prepare for their next challenge against Seton Hill on April 16th, the Wheeling Cardinals are focused on improving their performance at the plate and finding ways to turn the tide of their season.
