Exciting Matchup: Grambling Tops Bethune-Cookman
In a thrilling game at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium, Grambling State edged out Bethune-Cookman with a 31-23 victory. Hayden Benoit led the Tigers, throwing four touchdown passes, which showcased his growing prowess as a quarterback.
The game kicked off with a bang. On the very first play, Bethune-Cookman’s quarterback, Cam’Ron Ransom, fumbled the ball after a sack by Grambling’s Marcellius Johnson. This set up an early field goal for the Tigers. Despite the setback, the Wildcats fought back.
Timmy McClain, replacing Ransom later in the game, quickly made an impact, scoring a touchdown on a well-designed run. His performance was impressive—he completed 15 out of 18 passes for a total of 224 yards and added a rushing touchdown.
Both teams exchanged leads in a fast-paced first half. Grambling’s Benoit responded to McClain’s touchdown with a deep pass to Nae’Saan Dickerson, giving the Tigers a slim lead. The Wildcats didn’t back down. McClain hit Maleek Huggins with a long touchdown pass to tie things up again.
Tempers flared in the second half, leading to multiple unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. The game remained intense, with each team trading punts and turnovers. But Benoit’s ability to connect with his receivers made a difference. His final touchdown pass to Keith Jones Jr. built a strong lead for Grambling.
Interestingly, statistics show that Grambling’s success came from their efficient passing game, while Bethune-Cookman struggled on the ground, averaging just 0.9 yards per carry. Defensively, Antone Watts led the Wildcats with eight tackles, showcasing his importance to the team’s defense.
As the game wrapped up, momentum shifted again. After a quick Bethune-Cookman field goal, an onside kick attempt fell short, sealing the Tigers’ win.
Next week, Bethune-Cookman will travel to face Jackson State. The Wildcats will look to bounce back from this loss and capitalize on their strong passing game.
