WACO, Texas – The Kansas Jayhawks faced a tough match against Baylor, falling 4-1 on Sunday. Coach Todd Chapman noted that Baylor adapted to the conditions better. “We had a solid chance to win the doubles point, but it slipped away, which proved crucial,” he said.
With this loss, Kansas’s record drops to 7-7 (3-2 Big 12), while Baylor improves to 9-4 (5-1 Big 12). In doubles play, Kansas struggled, losing two matches despite a win on court two where Heike Janse van Vuuren and Meg McCarty defeated their opponents 6-4.
Baylor clinched the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Zuzana Kubacha and Gabrielle Villegas mustered a 7-5 victory over Kansas’s Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina. Na Dong and Alian Zack also won their match 7-5.
In singles, Kansas managed just one victory. Nahyeong Cho won in straight sets against Ivkovic, 6-3, 6-3. Two other matches for Kansas were close but ended unfinished. Arystanbekova was leading her match 7-5, 3-0 before it was called.
Baylor’s victories came from notable players. No. 44 Dong defeated No. 45 Kyoka Kubo, 6-2, 6-1. Additionally, No. 100 Kubacha defeated van Vuuren, 6-3, 6-4, and Zack bested McCarty, 6-2, 6-2.
Looking ahead, Kansas will play at home against Houston on March 20. The match will be held at the Jayhawk Tennis Center at 5 p.m. CT.
