Heartbreaking Loss: Mountain Hawks Fall 4-2 to Lafayette in Thrilling Pitcher’s Duel – Lehigh University Athletics

EASTON, Pa. – The latest chapter of The Rivalry unfolded Friday at Kamine Stadium as the Lafayette Leopards faced off against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. The game ended with a tight 4-2 victory for Lafayette.

Lafayette’s pitcher, Tristan Helmick, delivered an impressive performance. He threw seven innings, striking out 14 batters and allowing only two earned runs. On the other side, Lehigh’s Max Treonze pitched a solid game as well, going eight innings with seven strikeouts, but taking the loss.

The Mountain Hawks were quick to score first in the top of the first inning. Ian Wirtz hit an RBI single, giving Lehigh a brief 1-0 lead. But the Leopards bounced back in the bottom of the inning, with Matt Colella and Brandon Doubek driving in runs to put Lafayette ahead 2-1. They continued to build their lead with additional runs in the second and third innings, making the score 4-1.

As the game went on, both pitchers held strong, posting scoreless innings through the fourth, fifth, and sixth. In the seventh, the Mountain Hawks cut into Lafayette’s lead with a single from Robbie Carvelli. This brought the score to 4-2. Lafayette’s Owen Basso came on in the eighth and recorded five strikeouts before wrapping up the game, securing the Leopards’ first win after a tough nine-game streak.

Aidan Quinn and Carvelli each had two hits for Lehigh, while Helmick’s performance was certainly the highlight for Lafayette fans.

The rivalry continues as the Mountain Hawks prepare for a doubleheader against the Leopards on Saturday, April 18, starting at noon.
