Nashville, Tenn. – Western Carolina’s softball team faced a tough challenge at the Purple & Gold Classic, ending the tournament with an 8-2 loss to Purdue on Sunday at Lipscomb University. Despite the outcome, there were several highlights from the game.
Every Catamount player contributed a hit, spreading seven hits across the lineup. Sydney Dirks stood out by hitting her fifth double of the season, extending her on-base streak to an impressive 11 games. Courtney Marks led the team for the weekend with a .417 batting average, while Maya McPherson recorded six hits, including a double.
WCU started strong when they quickly responded to Purdue’s early lead. After the Boilermakers scored first with an RBI triple, the Catamounts tied it when Wonsick brought in a run after a double from Dirks. WCU even briefly took the lead, scoring again in the second inning. A hit by Waitley helped push the team ahead 2-1.
However, Purdue reclaimed the lead in the third inning, scoring both on a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout. As the game progressed, Purdue added runs to solidify their lead. By the end, they had scored twice more in the seventh inning for the final tally.
On the pitching side, Amanda Fulton recorded 20 strikeouts over the weekend, reflecting her growing performance on the mound. Meanwhile, Julia Gossett from Purdue excelled, striking out 12 Catamounts in just over five innings.
This loss brings Western Carolina’s record to 10-6 for the season. They will now prepare to host the Catamount Classic at home, where they will face Penn, Robert Morris, and Ohio in a three-day, 10-game tournament. Excitement is high as fans look forward to cheering for their team in Cullowhee.
