In the days before their deaths, Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, had lost touch with several family members. Betsy had not called her mother, Yoshie Feaster, who has dementia, since October. This worried Yoshie’s housekeeper, Keiko, who has been caring for her for over twenty years.
Keiko spoke with the Daily Mail just two days after Gene, 95, and Betsy, 65, were found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico home, along with one of their dogs. She revealed that Yoshie was anxious when her daughter’s phone calls stopped coming, as Betsy usually reached out every month or so.
Authorities notified Yoshie about her daughter’s tragic passing, but due to her condition, she has forgotten this heart-wrenching news. Keiko expressed sympathy for Yoshie, noting her fluctuating emotions. “She was very upset when she learned about Betsy, but now she seems fine,” Keiko said.
Yoshie is Betsy’s only close relative. The couple had been married for 34 years, and their bond was described as a true love affair by a family friend after their deaths.
Santa Fe Sheriff Adan Mendoza shared details about the circumstances of Gene and Betsy’s deaths. The couple likely died at least nine days before they were discovered by maintenance workers. Gene had a pacemaker that recorded its last event on February 17, which police believe was the day he passed away.
Both Gene and Betsy were found without any signs of trauma, and they tested negative for carbon monoxide poisoning. The exact cause of their deaths is still under investigation.
Family members announced their passing with sadness, stating how much Gene, a celebrated actor known for films like “The French Connection,” meant to them as a father and grandfather. They expressed their deep sorrow over the loss.
The police found the couple’s home unsecured with no evidence of forced entry. Items found at the scene included prescription medications and personal belongings, which may help clarify the timeline leading up to their deaths. Though there is currently no suspicion of foul play, investigators are treating the situation with caution.
Friends remembered Gene and Betsy as a happy couple, sharing their shock at the news of their deaths. They spoke about the strong love the couple shared throughout their life together.
