North Texas Softball’s Tough Loss in Conference Championship
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The North Texas (UNT) softball team faced a tough loss against East Carolina (ECU) in the American Conference Championship Quarterfinals, ending 4-2 after nine innings at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
After being down 1-0 for six innings, UNT rallied in the seventh. Ariah Mitchell tied the game with an RBI single, followed by Madison Conley’s two-run double, giving UNT a brief 2-1 lead. Unfortunately, ECU answered back, leveling the score in their half of the seventh and clinching the win with a dramatic walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth.
Head coach Cody White praised his team’s effort. “Our team showed relentless fight all night. I couldn’t be more proud of this group,” he said.
Pitcher Anneca Anderson (L, 12-9) delivered a standout performance, throwing a career-high 171 pitches over 8 2/3 innings and striking out eight batters. This game marked her tie for the ninth-most strikeouts in UNT history with 187.
Conley had a notable game, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate. She set a new single-season record for walks at UNT with 39 and tied for the most doubles in a season with 16, previously held by other UNT greats like Kelli Schkade.
Despite their efforts, UNT left 13 runners on base, including seven in scoring positions, highlighting a frustrating inability to capitalize on opportunities.
Historically, this season was significant for UNT softball. They scored 300 runs, marking just the second time in their history to reach this milestone. They also ranked in the top five for numerous single-season offensive statistics, including batting average and total bases.
As the team reflects on their performance, it’s a moment of both pride and lessons learned. The resilience they showed could be a foundation as they prepare for future seasons. For more detailed NCAA statistical insights, check out the NCAA’s official site here.
