UAA Women’s Basketball: A Tough Battle Against Central Washington
On January 3, the Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team faced off against No. 16 Central Washington. Despite a strong effort, the Seawolves fell 77-65 at the Alaska Airlines Center.
Mylee Anderson led the team with 16 points, while Kimberly Carrada Sanchez contributed 15 points, playing a key role in a remarkable comeback from a 21-point deficit. Mahaila Harrison added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Central Washington showcased their strength with Asher Cai, the GNAC Preseason Player of the Year, scoring 27 points and grabbing nine rebounds. The Wildcats also outperformed the Seawolves on the boards, achieving a 45-27 rebounding advantage.
Coach Matt Thune praised his team’s determination, saying, “I loved the heart and grit we showed. We need to execute better throughout the game, especially against strong teams like Central.”
The Wildcats started the game aggressively, jumping ahead with a 16-3 run. By halftime, they led by 17 points, capitalizing on their ability to control the boards.
The Seawolves began to close the gap in the third quarter, with Carrada Sanchez hitting a pivotal three-pointer. They made a valiant push, tying the game at 65 in the final minutes. However, Central Washington regained control, scoring crucial baskets down the stretch.
In the recent survey by the National Federation of State High School Associations, basketball remains one of the most popular sports for girls in high school, which reflects the growing interest in women’s sports. This year, women’s basketball saw a 6% increase in participation rates across the nation.
The Seawolves look to bounce back as they prepare for their next game against Alaska Fairbanks. Even in defeat, the resilience shown by UAA highlights the growing competitiveness and excitement around women’s basketball.
