Longwood Baseball’s Remarkable Journey Comes to an End
Longwood Baseball’s inspiring run in the Big South Championship wrapped up on Sunday against USC Upstate. After an intense week, the Lancers (34-27) claimed their spot in the championship game, marking a historic moment for the team.
Despite their brave efforts, Longwood lost 8-1 in the final game. The team, full of determination and spirit, played seven games in just five days. Head Coach Ray Noe praised his players, saying, “I couldn’t be prouder. They fought hard and never gave up.”
This tournament marked a significant milestone for Longwood. They reached the Big South Championship game for the first time and finished as runners-up. Their 34 wins tied for the most in twenty years and they’ve now surpassed 30 wins for the third time in that span.
Noe highlighted the team’s journey: “Belief and willpower are powerful. They wanted one last game together. To make it through five elimination games to get to the final is incredible.” This year’s 20-win improvement from last season ties the team’s best turnaround in history, achieved back in 1991 when they reached the Division II World Series.
The Lancers made history by being the first team in the conference to defeat all five other teams in the tournament. Their aggressive style of play has become a hallmark under Coach Noe, who said, “This group rewrote our history and set the stage for future successes.”
In recognition of their efforts in the tournament, four Longwood players made it to the Big South All-Tournament Team: Jon Howard, Ben Pulliam, Jae’dan Carter, and JR Fordham. This is a first for the program, showcasing the talent emerging from Longwood.

- Jon Howard led the tournament with 11 RBIs and homered in four games.
- Ben Pulliam scored eight runs and contributed 10 RBIs, with four doubles and two home runs.
- Jae’dan Carter added 10 RBIs to the team’s cause.

Notably, Joe Castrichini pitched 5.2 innings in the final game, showcasing significant growth since February.
