It was early morning when Suzette Hall and volunteer Mary Nakiso arrived at a local car dealership. They were there to rescue a dog named Angel, who had been living there for weeks, hoping to find his family.
When the doors of the dealership opened, they saw something heartbreaking. Angel started to follow the customers around the lot, tail wagging, as if he thought maybe one of them was his family. Suzette was moved. “It broke us,” she said.
Previously, a kind woman named Denisse Miranda had fed Angel daily. She told Suzette that he was usually too scared to approach people, often running away when they got too close. However, this day was different.
To catch Angel safely, Suzette and Mary had brought a humane trap. Their plan was to lure him in with food. Sadly, when they set the trap, the noise scared him off. Still, Angel kept coming back, which showed he wanted to trust but just couldn’t yet.
As shoppers arrived, Angel’s behavior changed. He would trot behind them, eyes full of hope. The moment was tense. Mary decided to take a new approach. Instead of staying back, she crouched down, offering love and affection. To everyone’s surprise, Angel let her pet him. This moment was key; he began to lower his guard.
Then came the miracle. Once Angel accepted Mary’s kindness, she was able to slip a leash around his neck. They quickly drove him to Camino Pet Hospital for a checkup and a much-needed bath. He was exhausted but safe.
Angel is currently in foster care, recovering and learning to trust again. Suzette expresses hope that a loving family will adopt him soon. For now, Angel is no longer alone, no longer searching for a family in a parking lot. He’s safe and on his way to finding a forever home.
The rise in awareness about animal rescues has been significant, with groups across the U.S. seeing increases in community involvement. In 2021, a survey revealed that 70% of pet owners consider adoption over buying from breeders. More people are recognizing the importance of giving a second chance to homeless animals like Angel.
Animal advocate organizations suggest that community education can help further reduce the number of strays. The future looks bright, and the story of Angel is just one of many that reminds us of the impact compassion can have.
