Montana has a strong sense of community, and this is especially evident at the Churchill Retirement Home. Here, the stories of residents like Don Swank shine a light on a rich history and shared experiences.
Don, a World War II veteran, is 98 years old. He recalls, “I’m glad I went. I’d do it again if I had to.” Born near the Little Bighorn River, Don grew up working on ranches. He was just a teenager when he was drafted into the Army.
“I was 18, working on the ranch when they came for me,” Don says. He served for two years in an artillery unit, spending time guarding Japanese POW camps. As he sailed to the Philippines, Japan surrendered just five days into the journey. Don returned to Montana, going back to ranch life after his service.
I asked him what he’s learned in his nearly century-long life. “Slow down a little and live. It goes too quick, too fast,” he replied with a smile.
At the start of January, Don moved to the Churchill Retirement Home. His family shares that his quality of life has improved greatly. “The people here are kind and helpful,” he says. “One even trimmed my fingernails for me this morning!”
Recently, a group of residents enjoyed an outing to a local farm, a trip that brought joy to everyone involved.
However, quality care comes at a price. Don’s family is currently raising funds to support his stay at the home. They started a GoFundMe campaign to help with the costs of his care.
“We’ve applied for VA help, but it won’t arrive soon enough. He sold his house to cover costs. He can’t stay with us anymore. My Dad believed in kindness and lending a helping hand. If you knew him, you’d love him just like I do.”
