BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A local charity supporting disabled veterans needs help. They are searching for a trailer that was stolen from their parking lot. This trailer is critical for their mission of delivering food to the community.
Every two weeks, the Disabled Veterans of America organizes food boxes to distribute. Ernest Coleman, a chapter officer, explains that while it’s not a formal part of their mission, they feel compelled to serve the community.
Coleman purchased the trailer himself to assist in gathering supplies. Unfortunately, it was stolen on March 26. Leaders of the chapter are hopeful it will be located soon.
On March 27, Commander Mattie Harper found the trailer missing when she arrived for work. The gate was left wide open, raising concerns. A security camera captured footage of someone attaching the trailer to a moving truck and driving away.
“It’s shocking that someone would take from those who served our country,” Coleman remarked. The community has come together to help in various ways, but the loss has created additional challenges.
The organization has filed a police report and is asking for anyone with information to contact them. They’re offering a $500 reward for tips leading to the trailer’s return.
In a recent survey, 65% of Americans expressed concern about theft impacting non-profit organizations, especially those aiding vulnerable groups like veterans. This incident highlights the need for community support and vigilance.
