Help Stewpot Combat Mississippi Food Network Shortage: Your Donations Make a Difference!

NATCHEZ — The Natchez Stewpot is facing a challenge with food supplies. Director Beverly Adams has noted that over the warmer months, the Stewpot has been working hard to feed those in need. “Since around March, we’ve seen a drop in the food items we get from the Mississippi Food Network. It’s still slower than before,” she explained.

Why is this happening? The Mississippi Food Network relies on funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for emergency food assistance. Recently, those funds have been decreasing. The USDA typically provides about 40% of the network’s budget for purchasing essential products, such as protein, dry foods, and canned vegetables.

Despite the difficulties, the Stewpot continues to serve around 350 meals daily. “We’ve had tough times, but we’ve never had to stop serving those in need,” Adams said. The community has been supportive, especially when the Stewpot recently sought help for frozen meats. “God is good,” Adams added.

Daily, about 150 people come in for lunch, while volunteers deliver another 200 meals to homes in the community. Historically, around 75% of the Stewpot’s meat supply has come from the Mississippi Food Network, delivered every two weeks. However, as Adams pointed out, “We hardly get any from them anymore.” Fresh produce is also becoming scarce.

Adams mentioned that donations typically spike during the winter holidays, but the need exists year-round. “We serve food every day, even on holidays.” The Stewpot is always open to any donations of frozen meats, canned or fresh fruits, and vegetables. Monetary contributions are also welcome and can be mailed to P.O. Box 298, Natchez, MS 39121.
