Helping Hands: United Way’s Food Drive Supports 900 Local Families in Need

FITCHBURG – The United Way of North Central Massachusetts (UWNCM) recently wrapped up its annual April Foods Drive. This year, the initiative was a success, distributing over 7,500 pounds of food— valued at around $14,625—to help 900 families in the area.

From April to June, donation boxes appeared in libraries, schools, and grocery stores across North Central Massachusetts. Community members stepped up to contribute, and UWNCM partnered with local food pantries and Growing Places to deliver fresh produce alongside non-perishables.

All together, the drive made a significant impact. With in-kind donations and the hard work of 21 volunteers putting in 52 hours of service, the total contribution reached an impressive $26,533. What’s more, the dedication of these volunteers and generous donors is truly inspiring.

Notable supporters included Local Roots Cannabis Crafted and Christ Church Fitchburg, who provided fresh produce. Catania Oil donated two pallets of cooking oil, making the drive even more impactful, while Point32Health supplied bags and hand sanitizer for safety.

Among the volunteers were staff from The Club: Lunenburg Teen Center. Their ongoing support highlights a strong community spirit in tackling food insecurity. “No one in our community should have to worry about their next meal,” said Judy Tomlinson, UWNCM Director of Community Impact. “When we come together, we can truly make a difference.” This sentiment resonates deeply in a time when many face uncertainty about their next meal.

The drive not only put food on tables but also renewed hope for many in the community. It serves as a reminder of what we can accomplish when we unite for a common cause. Every contribution, whether large or small, matters.
