Heritage University’s Rise Up Celebration: A Festive Start to the School Year!

Toppenish, Wash. — Heritage University is kicking off its new academic year with a celebration that promises to be unforgettable. The event, called “Rise Up,” will be on Thursday, Sept. 4, from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the university’s Great Lawn. It’s free and open to students, faculty, staff, families, and the broader community. So far, over 800 people have signed up!

Dr. Christopher Gilmer, the new president, is hosting the event. He took office this summer and wanted to create an atmosphere of joy and unity. Inspired by the song “Rise Up” by Andra Day, he sees this celebration as an anthem for the year ahead. “We want to focus on hope and the positive things we have here,” he shared. The event even features a hot air balloon to symbolize rising up, adding a unique touch to the festivities.

Gilmer describes his leadership style as one that balances fun with seriousness. “We need to take our work seriously,” he said, “but we can also find joy in what we do.” He will even show off his karaoke skills during the event.

Listening is a vital part of Gilmer’s approach. He believes that understanding the community should come before making changes. “I want to hear everyone’s stories and build on what’s already great,” he stated. This year, his focus will be on meeting people and preparing for the university’s next strategic plan.

Heritage University stands out as the only private institution in the U.S. that is both a Native American-Serving Nontribal Institution and a Hispanic-Serving Institution. Gilmer emphasizes that this identity is crucial to the university’s mission of access and equity. “Our mission is not just a part of us; it defines us,” he said.

In response to community needs, Heritage is expanding its academic offerings, including new master’s programs in social work, counseling, and education, all tailored to local workforce demands. Gilmer believes in building programs that allow students to get quality education without leaving home.

Looking ahead, Gilmer doesn’t think much about legacy but is focused on simple principles instilled by his mother: “Worry about being good, and let greatness take care of itself.” He hopes to lead Heritage into its 50th anniversary in 2033 with plans for new activities, fundraising, and strengthening community ties.

Heritage University is setting itself apart by focusing on serving first-generation college students in rural environments. As Gilmer puts it, “There’s something special about the Heritage model.” With a commitment to access and equity, Heritage is poised for a bright future.
