Two U.S. Army soldiers went missing in the ocean off Morocco’s southern coast during a training exercise over the weekend. They were part of the annual African Lion exercise, but their disappearance is not believed to be connected to the drills.
The incident occurred when a group of service members hiked to watch the sunset. One soldier fell into the water, prompting a desperate rescue attempt. Nearby soldiers linked together using their belts to reach him but couldn’t succeed. Another soldier jumped in to help, but was hit by a wave. A third soldier also attempted a rescue but could only return to the shore safely.
As of Monday, rescue teams were still searching the waters. They utilized aircraft, drones, divers, and boats in the ongoing effort. According to recent reports, about 7,000 troops from over 30 nations are participating in the African Lion exercise, which is led by AFRICOM, the U.S. Department of Defense’s unified combatant command for Africa.
