A courageous father from Canada, Yuji Hu, tragically lost his life while trying to save his 5-year-old daughter from the ocean during severe flash flooding in California. The family was at Garrapata State Beach in Carmel when the disaster occurred.
On that fateful day, waves estimated at 15 to 20 feet swept the young girl into the water. Hu quickly jumped in after her. Witnesses say he managed to hold onto her briefly before they were both pulled further out to sea. His wife also jumped in to help but was unable to reach them. She swam back, where their two-year-old child was safe on shore.
A beachgoer and an off-duty California State Parks officer eventually got Hu out of the water and attempted life-saving measures. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital not long after. His wife was treated for hypothermia but was released the next day.
Rescue efforts to find their daughter continued throughout the day but were suspended at sunset. As of now, she is still missing and was last seen wearing a white shirt. Officials noted that she wasn’t wearing a life jacket, which could have made a difference in her safety.
