A home health aide from Massachusetts is bravely recounting a terrifying incident where she was attacked by a client. She wishes to remain anonymous due to the traumatic nature of the event.
While working a double shift in an apartment complex, she felt her life was in danger. The ordeal began when a man in his 70s, whom she had cared for over two years, suddenly turned aggressive after waking up at night.
“I was screaming, ‘Help! Help!’” she recalled. The man asked her what time it was and, in an unexpected turn, came at her with a knife.
During the attack, he stabbed and slashed her while she was sitting in a recliner. Despite her desperate attempts to escape by kicking and struggling, he held her down.
Summoning all her strength, she managed to push him away and ran towards the door, with him chasing her wielding a piece of wood. “He’s not going to kill me,” she thought as she fought to escape.
Fortunately, a security guard stepped in just in time. When he intervened, the attacker swung the wood at him but lost his footing and fell. This allowed her to flee to safety.
After two days in the hospital, where she received blood transfusions and multiple stitches, she is now on the road to recovery. Physically and mentally drained, she has decided not to return to her job as a home health aide after ten years of service.
“This is a hard job. Nobody wants to do this work,” she reflected on her experience. The assailant faces assault and battery charges and will be arraigned once he is released from the hospital.
