Heroic Rescuers Sprint to Save Brazilian Tourist Who Plunged into Ravine at Popular Indonesian Volcano

Indonesian rescuers are working hard to reach Juliana Marins, a 26-year-old Brazilian tourist who fell into a ravine on Mount Rinjani. After disappearing on Saturday, Juliana’s situation became critical as search efforts were hampered by bad weather.

Authorities spotted her using a drone but faced challenges due to steep terrain and fog. Muhammad Hariyadi, head of the Mataram Search and Rescue Office, noted that Juliana had slipped from about 500 feet to over 1,600 feet deep within the ravine.

On Saturday, rescuers heard her screams for help. At that time, she was alive but in shock. Rescuers from Gunung Rinjani National Park are using thermal drones, mountaineering equipment, and possibly a helicopter to assist in the rescue. As of now, around 50 rescuers are on site, trying to devise a safe plan for her retrieval.

Public support has surged, with an Instagram account dedicated to her rescue gaining over a million followers. Posts on the account convey encouragement, saying, “Hang in there, Juliana! Help is on the way!”

Juliana’s sister, Marianna, mentioned that the climbing guide left Juliana alone on the trail before her fall. Juliana had been sharing her backpacking adventures across Thailand and Vietnam before arriving in Indonesia.

Lombok Island is known for its beautiful scenery and hiking opportunities, making Mount Rinjani a popular destination. However, this isn’t the first time the area has seen trouble. In 2018, an earthquake caused landslides that stranded many hikers.

As experts continue to assess the situation, they remind travelers to take extra precautions when hiking in unfamiliar areas. Weather conditions and terrain can change quickly, making safety preparations crucial.
