HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women’s soccer team faced a tough match against Elon, losing 1-0 at Vert Stadium on Sunday.
High Point’s record now stands at 0-3-2, while Elon is doing well at 4-0-1.
Coach Aaron McGuiness stated, “This was probably our most productive game this season. It’s hard to swallow a loss like this, especially when the teams seemed evenly matched. A draw would have been fair. We missed some key opportunities in the box, which made a difference.”
The game kicked off with intensity; Elon had an early shot that High Point goalkeeper Aubrey McKessy deflected over the net. High Point responded quickly, with players like Peyton Gilmore and Bella Burr taking several shots.
Fans reacted positively on social media, showing support for McKessy’s early save, underscoring the excitement around the game.
As the teams went into halftime, the score remained 0-0. In the second half, High Point had promising chances again, with Faye Battersby and Abigail Dibble both coming close to scoring, but their shots were saved.
In the 77th minute, Elon capitalized on a rebound, scoring the only goal of the match. Jess Beck found the net after the initial shot from Isa Murdock, putting Elon ahead. High Point pushed hard for an equalizer in the final minutes but couldn’t break through.
The match highlighted the importance of seizing chances, a sentiment echoed by sports analysts who argue that being opportunistic can often define a game’s outcome.
Next up, High Point will face UNC Greensboro on Thursday, September 4, starting at 6:00 p.m.
