BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama State football kicked off the 2025 season with a thrilling contest, falling to UAB 52-42 at Protective Stadium. Quarterback Andrew Body had a standout performance, throwing for 312 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 119 yards, including a stunning 60-yard run for a score. Together, the Hornets amassed 514 yards of total offense.

Body distributed the ball well. Jalen Jones enjoyed a career game, making six catches for 174 yards, highlighted by a 69-yard touchdown. Ajai Harrell also shined, with four receptions for 76 yards. Scores from Asa Gregg and Dylan Djete contributed to the team’s strong offensive showing. Jamarie Hostzclaw added 54 rushing yards and a touchdown, enhancing Body’s efforts.

The game was closely contested. At halftime, Alabama State was up 21-17 after Body’s 31-yard touchdown pass to Harrell just before the break. The Hornets extended their lead to 28-17 early in the third quarter with another touchdown.

However, UAB quickly shifted the momentum, scoring three consecutive touchdowns. The Hornets fought back, with Hostzclaw and Jones keeping the game competitive. Despite their efforts, UAB secured the win with a late touchdown.

On defense, Keane Lewis led Alabama State with eight tackles, while Ta’Shaun Sims recorded seven. The Hornets excelled on third downs, converting 13 out of 15 attempts and controlling the clock for nearly 34 minutes.

Looking ahead, Alabama State will face Southern University on Saturday, September 6, at 6 p.m. in Baton Rouge, La.
