On Monday, opening statements will kick off in the Highland Park parade shooting trial. This trial revolves around Robert Crimo III, who faces charges of murdering seven people and injuring many others during a tragic incident at a Fourth of July parade in 2022.
A jury made up of 12 jurors and six alternates was selected last week. The jury features diverse individuals, including a trucking company owner, a hospice nurse, a college student aspiring to be a firefighter, and a woman with a family history linked to violence against police officers.
Interestingly, Crimo did not attend the last day of jury selection. He was present for part of the first two days but left after lunch on both occasions. However, his absence won’t delay the trial.
The trial is expected to last between three to five weeks, and most survivors from the shooting are likely to testify. Some of the victims who lost their lives include 64-year-old Katherine Goldstein, 35-year-old Irina McCarthy, 37-year-old Kevin McCarthy, and 88-year-old Stephen Straus, among others.
Last summer, Crimo declined a plea deal, setting the stage for this trial. Support is available for those affected by the shooting. The United Way of Lake County provides year-round assistance; anyone in need can call 211 for help.
