The fourth meeting of the BIMSTEC Joint Working Group on Environment and Climate Change wrapped up in Thimphu, Bhutan, focusing on strengthening regional cooperation and climate finance.
Held on January 15–16, this gathering brought together representatives from all seven BIMSTEC member countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The event allowed nations to share ideas and strategies for tackling climate challenges.
S. M. Mahbubul Alam, from Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led his country’s delegation. The major topic was how to mobilize resources for climate action effectively. The group also established guidelines for future operations and reviewed the current initiatives outlined in the BIMSTEC Plan of Action.
Participants stressed the urgency of launching new initiatives to mitigate climate risks and safeguard the region’s unique ecosystems. Notably, experts highlighted Bangladesh’s role as crucial for enhancing environmental security in the Himalayas and along the Bay of Bengal’s coast.
Research shows that climate finance is essential for developing countries to adapt and respond to climate change. According to a recent report from the United Nations, only about $30 billion of the $100 billion promised annually in climate aid is reaching the most vulnerable nations. This gap underscores the need for coordinated efforts like those discussed at the Thimphu meeting.
Furthermore, studies indicate that economies relying on agriculture and natural resources are particularly at risk. As these sectors face increasing pressure from climate change, the cooperation seen in BIMSTEC could pave the way for innovative solutions and sustainable development strategies.
