American grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura praised World Champion D Gukesh for his impressive performance against Anish Giri in the opening round of the Tata Steel chess tournament. Gukesh managed to beat Giri, who made a significant mistake, giving Gukesh the upper hand. Just last month, Gukesh won the world championship against Ding Liren due to a similar blunder.
“It’s a heartbreaker for Anish, but Gukesh showed great defense,” Nakamura shared on his YouTube channel. He noted that despite Gukesh’s blunder with the h3 move, he handled the pressure well. “Gukesh really put Anish to the test,” he added.
This match marks Gukesh’s first classical game since his thrilling victory over Ding Liren in Singapore. Fresh from winning the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award the night before, Gukesh arrived in Wijk aan Zee just hours before the game started. “He flew in from India, even a bit tired, and jumped right into the action,” Nakamura commented.
During the match, Gukesh struggled at times, especially as Anish built a significant advantage on the board. Nakamura mentioned that Gukesh might have faced some jet lag due to his travels. Generally, Anish has performed well at this tournament, although he has faced challenges in other events.
This exciting start to the tournament showcases not only Gukesh’s talent but also the unpredictability of chess. Fans are eager to see how both players will perform in the coming rounds.
