Hikaru Nakamura faced off against Gukesh in a recent match for the Weissenhaus leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour. The two players started strong, drawing their first two classical games and the rapid tiebreaks. It wasn’t until their fourth game that Nakamura clinched a victory, defeating Gukesh, the reigning world champion.
This loss means Gukesh has struggled in this tournament, without a single win so far. After the match, Nakamura shared his thoughts on Gukesh’s performance. He pointed out that Gukesh seems to struggle when time is running low. “When he gets low on time, his intuition doesn’t seem to help him much, and he can’t work through his calculations,” Nakamura said.
Interestingly, Gukesh was seen analyzing positions with Fabiano Caruana before their games. However, during the tournament, players only learn their opening positions shortly before the match, which means they have limited time to prepare. Most top players, including Nakamura, often collaborate to refine their strategies, so Nakamura found it odd that Gukesh wasn’t utilizing this approach.
For context, during his quarterfinal against Caruana, Gukesh faced a tough moment, with just one second left on his clock while in a losing position. Remarkably, his heart rate remained calm at 78 beats per minute, highlighting his mental strength, as noted by experts.
Nakamura expressed surprise that Gukesh wasn’t more proactive in collaborating with Caruana, suggesting that it could be more beneficial to analyze together. “Not taking advantage of opportunities to analyze seems like a disadvantage. I don’t understand why Gukesh isn’t doing this. It’s essential to learn from others, especially someone as skilled as Fabiano,” he remarked.
The match showcased the intensity and strategic depth of high-level chess, reflecting both the skills of the players and the unique challenges posed by the tournament format.
