Sinners Shatters Oscar Records
Ryan Coogler’s film Sinners has made headlines as the first movie nominated for 16 Academy Awards, a record-breaking achievement. Starring Michael B. Jordan, the film tells the gripping story of twin brothers running a blues club in 1930s Mississippi while facing racism and supernatural threats. So far, it has earned $368 million worldwide and receives nods for best picture, best director, and performance categories including Delroy Lindo and Wunmi Mosaku.
Ruth E. Carter’s inclusion for costume design marks her fifth nomination, making her the most-nominated Black woman in Oscar history.
This year, Sinners surpasses the previous record of 14 nominations held by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997), and La La Land (2016). However, unlike those films, which achieved several wins, expectations are lower for Coogler’s drama when the awards are distributed on March 15.
Another strong contender this year is the countercultural comedy One Battle After Another, which nabbed 13 nominations. Paul Thomas Anderson, with 11 prior nominations but no wins, is favored to win best picture and best director. Teyana Taylor is also anticipated to take home the award for supporting actress.
In the best actress category, Jessie Buckley shines in Hamnet, another film that performed well with eight nominations. Meanwhile, Chloe Zhao, a historic best director Oscar winner for Nomadland, stands out again this year. She is the only female director in the running alongside other top contenders.
Timothée Chalamet, beloved for his role as a table tennis hustler in Marty Supreme, could become the second youngest best actor winner ever if he secures the award this year. However, several stars, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Dwayne Johnson, were left disappointed with no nominations this time.
This year’s nominations reflect a notable shift toward diversity. The Academy has seen an increase in international films such as Sentimental Value, which received nine nominations, including ones for acting and best picture. Wagner Moura from The Secret Agent makes history as the first Brazilian nominated for best actor.
The Academy has also evolved. A 2014 survey revealed Oscar voters were predominantly older white men. Today, with more inclusive measures, at least 35% of voters identify as women and 25% as ethnic minorities, reflecting a significant change in the demographics of those who make such crucial decisions.
As we approach the Oscars, the buzz is growing. The voting for the next round starts on February 26, ensuring voters watch all nominated films. The ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, promises to be an exciting showcase of talent and storytelling.
