Washington Commanders to Return to RFK Campus with Major Development Plans

Today in Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser and Josh Harris, Managing Partner of the Washington Commanders, announced exciting plans to bring the team back to the RFK campus. This development will cover 180 acres and include a new, modern stadium along with housing, parks, hotels, restaurants, and more.

Mayor Bowser expressed her enthusiasm, saying, "We’re thrilled to welcome the Commanders back to their home. This isn’t just about football; it’s about creating jobs and revitalizing our community." She emphasized that this partnership will be a major step toward invigorating the city’s economy.

Josh Harris echoed this sentiment, recalling RFK Stadium’s legendary past. The Commanders dominated the NFL, winning three Super Bowls there. He stated, "We’re determined to honor that legacy with a new stadium, transforming the area into a vibrant hub for fans and residents alike."

The deal outlines a significant investment—over $2.7 billion from the Commanders for a year-round stadium and other related improvements. This marks the largest private investment in DC’s history. The city will also contribute $500 million, ensuring no cuts to the operating budget, thanks to the Sports Facilities Fee.

Furthermore, 5,000 to 6,000 new housing units are planned, with at least 30% designated as affordable. This aims to address the local housing crisis and make the community more accessible. A sportsplex for year-round youth events will also be built, supported by an $89 million budget proposal.

Public transit will make getting to the RFK campus easy, with around 8,000 parking spots planned for visitors. The project is expected to create 14,000 construction jobs and 2,000 permanent positions, with anticipated total tax revenue around $4 billion over 30 years.

Historically, RFK Stadium was home to the Commanders from 1961 to 1996. The stadium created memorable experiences for fans, becoming a defining location for sports in Washington. Mayor Bowser’s administration has successfully transformed other neighborhoods using similar sports investments, turning them into thriving areas.
