Historic Journey: America’s Founding Documents Take Flight for the First Time on the Freedom Plane

For the first time ever, iconic U.S. documents are flying across the country on their own plane. This special trip honors America’s history and spirit just in time for the nation’s birthday celebrations.

Monica Crowley, chief of protocol of the U.S., said, “This initiative is all about bringing our history to life and sending America’s birthday party from the nation’s capital to the heart of America.” The journey started at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and will visit eight cities through August.

The documents making this journey include a stone engraving of the Declaration of Independence, oaths from Founding Fathers like George Washington, and the Treaty of Paris that ended the American Revolution. Jim Byron from the National Archives emphasizes the careful handling of these precious items, noting they’re usually kept in secure vaults.

The plane, a Boeing 737 named the “Freedom Plane,” is part of a partnership between Boeing and the National Archives. Joe Seymour, one of the pilots, expressed pride in flying these historic documents, connecting the past with the present.

Interestingly, this tour draws inspiration from the Freedom Train of 1976, which showcased founding documents for the U.S. bicentennial. The current journey aims to reach communities that might not have the chance to see these treasures in Washington, D.C.

Statistics show that over 30 million passengers have boarded Boeing’s 737 family of airplanes, but this flight is unique in its cargo. By bringing history to people’s towns, it fosters a deeper connection with the nation’s roots.

So, what cities will get to host these documents? Here’s the list:

  • Kansas City, MO: March 6 – March 22
  • Atlanta, GA: March 27 – April 12
  • Los Angeles, CA: April 17 – May 3
  • Houston, TX: May 8 – May 25
  • Denver, CO: May 28 – June 14
  • Miami, FL: June 20 – July 5
  • Dearborn, MI: July 9 – July 26
  • Seattle, WA: July 30 – August 16

This historic journey not only showcases artifacts but also embodies a new wave of engagement with America’s foundational stories. It’s more than a display; it’s a celebration of heritage that brings history right to our doorsteps.
